|As I write this edition of the newsletter our All-Star teams are busy playing in the Commissioners Cup at Ryan Park. These teams have been practicing religiously under the lights weekdays at Ryan Park and from what I have seen from Saturday’s games, we should do extremely well. It is so refreshing to see volunteer parent coaches advance to the level of select All-Star coaches and giving their all for these players. The players themselves are thoroughly excited and proud – you can see it on their faces – to be representing Escondido Soccer Club in these winter tournaments.
As I have said before, to be selected for All-Stars really proves that these players are the ‘cream of the crop’ so to speak. The next step on their journey to mastering the basics of this sport is competitive tryouts. This is how great players are found and noticed, and this is where they step up onto the next rung of the educational level in soccer. We welcome one and all to our competitive tryouts in January (see flyer below).
Our competitive teams are wrapping up their seasons with the final Showcase events including the Presidio Cup this weekend in San Diego. Again I am excited to find that many of our teams are doing extremely well in this competition. Next on the competitive agenda is State and National Cups in January. Yes, our competitive season is a long one and runs from tryouts current year to tryouts the following year!
Congratulations to our competitive teams who won (6) or came second (5) in their respective divisions this year. In 2017 we had 44 teams and 60% of those teams finished in the top 5 of their respective divisions, which I might add, were top end divisions (Gold & Silver) as compared to last year. Here are our Champions and Runners-Up…

COMPETITIVE COACHING EVALUATIONS
This year we have a brand new way for players and parents to evaluate their coaches and to see how you feel about their performance this year. All players should receive a written Player Evaluation from your coach and each coach receives a written Coaches Evaluation from the Director of Coaching. Part of this evaluation are your comments, whether good, bad or indifferent. A = Excellent through E = Poor. Each coach will read your comments exactly how you wrote them but not including your name or contact information or the name of your child (player) – this gets erased before we attach them to the coaches report.
It is important for us moving forward that we get the complete picture of the coaches overall performance from behavior to promptness and from communication skills to organization. By doing this we are able to keep our top coaches in line for teams of their choice and bring in new coaches for the remaining teams. Each qualified coach can have a maximum of 2 teams, if allocated, and the same for each manager. We have found that more than 2 teams is not manageable at the standard we like to operate at.

YOUNGER TRYOUTS FOR 2018 COMPETITIVE TEAMS
Soon we will be accepting early registration sign-ups for our 2018 Younger Competitive Tryouts. Other clubs tend to have their tryouts earlier than us, but we know that State Cup and National Cup still have to be played around this time. See the flyer above and the age groups involved. Older tryouts will be a little later as high school soccer season will still be running.

END OF SEASON PARTY AND CELEBRATION
On January 13, 2018 we will be celebrating our teams’ contributions for the 2017 season and recognize the individual accomplishments of certain players. All players of each team will vote for who they think should be the Player’s Player of the Year and the coach will vote for who they think is the Footballer of the Year, or the player who has made the most impact in their eyes. Goalkeepers who have let in less goals in a regular season will also be recognized both younger and older, girls and boys.
The party will be a fundraising event to help raise funds for each individual competitive team selling goods and wares. Coaches of the Year both Recreational and Competitive will be recognized as will the Manager of the Year and the Volunteer of the Year.
Everyone is welcome!
